Celebrity Owl Needs a Name!

Tamarack Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center is pleased to announce a new addition to its family of education birds: an adult female Eastern Screech Owl. Name suggestions are being solicited for this special ambassador starting Sept. 20th. Stop back here to submit your name suggestion.

Though new to the education roster, this little owl is not new to being in the news. Back in 2010, she and her family of three owlets were rescued from a city park in Erie, PA when the tree limb holding their nest was cut down. Her story received coverage
in local newspapers and television. The owlets survived with no permanent damage and were released on Presque Isle once grown; their mother was not so lucky, suffering a wing fracture that would prevent her return to the wild. She has been cared for at Tamarack ever since.

In her new role, she will join the other education birds at Tamarack in providing programs to schools, service clubs, camps, churches, and other organizations. Tamarack has received the appropriate State and Federal permits to make this possible so the public can discover one of Pennsylvania’s smallest and enigmatic owls. For an opportunity to meet this little girl, call the center  at 814-763-2574 to schedule a program for your organization.

As an official ambassador to the public, she does have one more very special requirement: a name! The public is invited to submit suggestions for names. Between September 20 and Oct 5 names can be submitted through Tamarack’s website www.tamarackwildife.org or via US mail. If mailing in a suggestion, include the suggested name, reason for the suggestion, your name, address and phone number, and send to TWREC 21601 Stull Rd., Saegertown PA 16433.  Your contact information will be used only to inform you if your name is chosen as one of the finalists. Both groups, such as school classes, and individuals can enter suggestions.

After reviewing all the submitted names, the Tamarack Board of Directors will choose five for the public to vote on. October 10-20 the public can vote for their favorite name through the Center’s website or through US mail. This special bird’s chosen name will be announced at Tamarack’s Open House held onsite at the Center, October 21st where this charming owl can also be viewed in person.
