Two
Allegheny College Interns
(Bonner Leaders) Rescue a Swan
As Jennifer Sexton and Emily Gilbreath were driving
home from vacationing in Florida, they were looking forward to
staying for a couple of days at Emily's home in Pittsburgh, PA.
They just drove over the Pennsylvania state line into Washington
County when they spotted what they thought was a large plastic
bag on the road.
Much to their surprise, as they got closer, they discovered it
was a swan. The swan moved, and then got hit by a acar. They quickly
pulled off the road knowing they had the experience to capture
and help the now injured bird. Emily grabbed the only blanket
available, one her grandmother made her when she was a young
child.
As they quickly approached, the swan began to fun and attempted
to fly away from them. But they continued in pursuit until they
safely captured it.
Jennifer called Tamarack Wildlife Center to inquire as to whether
they could wait a few days before bringing it to The Center. Upon
hearing the large bird had been hit by a car, she was referred
to a wildlife rehabilitaor, no more than 20 minutes from Emily's
house.
The swan was taken there, treated for it's injuries, and a bacterial
infection.
Thanks for a job well done, Jennifer and Emily.
